A Ruined Economy – The swan song of every Labour government.

Once again, the Labour party has brought UK PLC to the brink of bankruptcy.

The conservatives tell us – in a bout of honesty, unusual for politicians – that large cuts will be necessary. They tell us this BEFORE the election, and yet …

Get ready for it again - all the usual are about to come out of the woodwork and with that tired refrain label the Conservative party the “Nasty” party.

Never mind that it has been 10 years of Labour custodianship that has brought us to this.

Never mind that even an 8 year old child knows, you don’t spend money you don’t have.

Never mind that until a couple of weeks ago Labour was looking us straight in the eye and telling us that no cuts were needed.

“Nasty party, Nasty party”

Like a spoilt child, screaming at mummy for more sweets.

It all looks to me like the return of politics after several years of collective denial about the true state of the economy and the public finances.

  they may not win, it's not certain yet.
  
  in a way, it would be interesting to see what labour would do if they WERE voted back in... a lot of the of the excess government spending during the last 10 years has been on public sector jobs / pay increases - i.e. the labour support base. Labour would have to take back the money from their own, that would get very messy.

May I remind people of the Norman Lamont / John Major Tory disaster? Now that was a recession. My two-hundred-thousand pound office block had to be sold off and realised a mere forty-five-thousand pounds. Four out of five of my major clients went bankrupt and I took a year's "holiday" on less than fifty pounds a week dole...... That's Conservative economics for you.

  I believe this is more serious, the amounts are certainly much larger, people just havn't "felt" it yet. although if the government play it the way they want to - the people may never feel it as such - they will just remortgage our future, sterling will slide relative to eastern currencies and we will quietly spend our lives paying tax to pay the interest on the debt.

  oh, and when i said "the government" there - that will apply to whoever wins the election. the damage has been done, it's just a case of ameliorating the effects.

    In fact what we are currently suffering is a failure of Capitalism. Unrestrained markets will always go for boom and bust....

      I define capitalism as the exchange of goods or services at a price agreeable to both parties - a "trade". I don't see how that's failed.
      
      What has failed is not capitalism but somthing else: the money system.
      
      capitalism requires a money system, but there are many alternatives to what we use today.
      
      in the west we have a debt-fiat money system. an elastic money system that expands automatically as credit is required.
      
      you have to be very carefull with a debt-fiat money system, if allowed to expand more quickly than it should you will get a boom-bust effect.
      
      it's the money system we employ that is the problem, not capitalism per se.

  An anecdote that proves nothing - an asset sold quickly in distressed 'fire sale' circumstances realises less than a price that it once had - who'd a thunk it??
  
  Brown has been an obscene in his disastrous handing of the economy from taxed pension dividends and gold sell off forwad. Its not just the lst 2 years. Lamont/Major were no-where in the same league, and in the long term econmically sound

    My "anecdote" was not a one-off, this happened to everybody; it was a total property crash. The banks pulled the rug out from under almost all small and medium businesses, the Treasury devalued the pound and played merry hell with interest rates as a result of three chancellor's worth of economic mismanagement. John Major was re-elected because Kinnock was unelectable because the public considered he was a buffoon. You had to have been there; our recent little contretemps was nothing like as bad.

Some very short memories here. The 1980s at least 3 and a half million unemployed. Very high rates of interest and schools falling apart.
Public services are not to blame, most people are on average or below average wages. Those at the top, Company Directors, Chairman, non executive directors have increased their salaries out of all proportion. there is now a greater gap between the rich and the poor than at any time since the 1930s.
If wealthy bankers want to leave this country, GOOD RIDDANCE. THE SOONER THEY GO THE BETTER.
