Thanks for all the replies to my Anarchy question, alot of them have made me evaluate, how seriously i took the concept in the late 1970's,i now think it was just a clever marketing tool by McClaren et al.But onto this democracy question. The so called election in Zimbabwe am I just being naive to feel angry about this affront to humanity,When the U.S. elections went on and zeb bush stopped people voting,Palestinians vote for Hamas and are roundly condemned for not voting the way the U.S,U.K and Israel wanted and even the British electoral system is flawed.I suppose I want to know what democracy is,Is it a Green Zone in Iraq,Is it Hamas,is it zimbabwe.Or are we in the west hypocrites who always cry democracy ,but is our democracy flawed?

Democracy is something to aim for, I think. Here in the UK it's not bad, but could be an awful lot better. There is a disconnect between what happens in parliament and what people really want to happen. I have some ideas on how that can be fixed, but they won't happen.

We do not live in democracy, rather plutocracy

Nope, we in the West are damned hypocrites....you're right about the Palestinians and Hamas...and Chile and Allende and we all know what happened to Allende...the USA made short shrift of him and his democratically elected government and put in a monster, Pinochet - their monster who proceeded to kill or imprison anybody who still supported Allende's party...It's happened in many countries where the USA didn't like the change of government...they brought the unwanted one down and replaced him with their own guy, who invariably turned out to be a thieving bastard...it'll be interesting to watch next what happens in South America because there's some very left wing governments been elected and the USA won't be pleased at all with all their investments threatened...Zimbabwe's election is basically non-existent with only one candidate but nobody seems able to come up with a satisfactory solution yet, and with Mugabe losing it completely, we've got another Amin in power destroying a country and everybody watches helplessly...Like Amin, Mugabe will probably retire eventually when there's nothing left for him to destroy and spend his old age living in the lap of luxury as the only way to get him out...mad world...democracy should be the best method of getting rid of unwanted leaders without the necessity of killing them as would have happened prior to its introduction. It only works where the leader accepts defeat graciously, but, unfortunately, not in the case of somebody who refuses to accept the will of the people, then it falls down...
