To what extent , if any , does or should whatever someone legally and privately gets up to in their private life affect their ability to do their job , or their right to keep it ?
And should newspapers , or other media outlets be alllowed to expose anyones private activities , providing no laws have been transgressed ?
There've been many examples of this , most recently the 'news of the world's' expose' of Max Mosley , 67 year old son of the late , former 'British Fascist' leader , and nazi sympathiser Oswald Mosley , having had a private party with five prostitutes in which they dressed in nazi and in prisoner uniforms , and whipped , humiliated each other , etc .
So now Max Mosley's position as president of the Formula One Motor Racing related International automobile federation seems in jeopardy .
For sure what he did will be distasteful , if not abhorrent to many , but , it occured privately and consensually amongst adults , and seems to bear no relation to his ability to do his job , competently or otherwise .
If he were a Bishop or anyone preaching sexual fidelity and morality to the rest of us , or if he were curator of the National Jewish Library for example , that would be a different matter .
I think there should be privacy laws protecting the exposure of anyones private life so long as it is legal between consenting adults and not dramatically at odds with their public role , and/or if they present themself as a 'clean living' devoutly moral character .
What do you think ?

Yes I agree Jenny , it'd be best , under the circumstances , for him and everyone , for him to quietly and gracefully step down from his FIA presidency .
From what I heard yesterday it seems that his private activities were common-knowledge amongst the other top people in F1 motor racing , and , what with his having referred to the once F1 champion driver Sir Jackie Stewart as a " certified halfwit " I do'nt think he's overly popular with many !-

well, it's unfortunate, but we are the product of our genes and Sir Oswald Mosley and Nancy Mitford probably passed on far more to their son than even he realised...according to him, he had been trying to live down his parents' reputation, but it seems he just turned it on its head and created fantasies of their beliefs...you would have thought he would have tried to keep a low profile if he was genuinely trying to lay their ghosts, but it seems not...oh, well, each to his own...

Sorry, Martin, got the wrong Mitford...it was Diane...not Nancy who was married to his father....big hugs...

I think prostitution is wrong.
but...
if what they did;
- is not at odds with their public role,
- affects no one against their wishes,
- does not contradict public statements they have made,
- is not illegal or breach of contract
then... it's kind of hard to see how it's anyone else's biz.

I agree with you...what people do in the privacy of their homes between consenting adults should be their business and their business alone...now, however, it has become public knowledge about Max Mosley's penchant for what sounds like a bit of Sadomasochism, will his colleagues on the International Automobile Federation be able to take him seriously as their President? Somehow I think it will colour their opinion of him...the modern need to dig up dirt on anybody in a position of authority anywhere seems to be the order of the day, so, I would suggest, anybody in such a position is rather unwise to indulge their fantasies anywhere whether in private or in public...clearly Max Mosley never thought of this when he hired the prostitutes and played out his dodge fantasy...under the circumstances, he could choose to stay and fight removal or retire discreetly having learned his lesson the hard way...
