So, basically, it doesn't matter how awful America is because there are other awful places, is that what the badly-lit big-mouth is trying to express?
If he wants my attention, he should turn off the irritating background noises, and take off the sunglasses. And if he manages to lose the sneering tone, I might feel inclined to discuss matters with him. Except that I have better things to do than be patronised by rude children. -

He is kinda smug but i can't help but agree. I often get annoyed with friends who simply critisize America as it seems to be the fashionable thing to do. What I always say is, would any European country be any different in their position? Oh yeah, we did rule the world once, and what happened? Ruthless Empire building, genocide, a pointless European war followed by the bloodiest war known in history, culminating in the European powers handing the metaphorical championship of the world to America. If you look at the politics surrounding the EU etc, it's not so much about improving our way of life and preventing war in Europe, but about competing with America to get become world leaders again. Frankly, considering our track record, I don't think enough time has passed. Not that I'm an apologist for all things American, I just call for a balanced view.

and anti-Americanism is oh so very fashionable at the moment.

a perceptive observation.

I have never figured out how the US ends up with the governments it does. Even though TV news there is absalute rubbish, the newspapers are generally better than here. Just about every American I have ever met is intelligent, and wouldnt have voted for Bush in their wildest dreams. All the Americans I know are against the Iraq war, and are just as critical of foreign policy as the rest of the world is. All the Americans I know would support having a proper National Health Service, oppose racism, work for a better environment, etc etc etc.
I like Americans so much I even married one. All I can think of is that either their elections are rigged, or something strange happens to them when there is a full moon! Hmmmmmmm. From personal experience I think the latter.

I think people forget that the US is made up of more than just the cosmopolitan coasts. The midwestern states are possibly their equivalent of, what was it, 'pebble-dash' man in Britain. Plus, their political system is a lot more polarized. It is quite common to ask an American 'Why did you vote Bush' and recieve the reply 'because I'm Republican' rather than 'because I agree with his policies'. The same can be said for democrats. Also, we assume that because Bush is famous for his foreign policy that that is the deciding factor for voting Americans. Domestic policy and other issues are not reported as much over here.

Well it's a very good defence of the good ol' USA...and yes, food for thought...don't think a lot of people thought badly of the USA and the Americans until the last ten years, well, not with so much vitriol anyway...or feared its influence so much...he's young enough not to know how a lot of Europeans and Brits regarded America...and it wasn't all bad at all...He may not want to see it, but Bush has destroyed the image of decent America around the world...Jazz originated there and we listen to it everyday, most of the authors I really enjoy are Americans, my best friend is American...I respected many of their thinkers, scientists and philosophers so while you may think I'm seriously anti-American, I'm not...I'm just against anything this damned Bush administration does...and so are a whole load of Americans...big hugs....
